math tasks

Grade 7
We are working with rational numbers and the four basic operations in each form: fractions, decimals, and integers. Ten Marks will be used and has hints and videos as needed.  Word problems will be an integral part of the work.
Standards: 7.NS.A 1&2

Grade 8
We are finishing up our work with module 4 Linear Equations. It will not be leaving us entirely as it shows up in future work and high school.  Reviewing the assessment, looking at the another method, elimination,of solving systems along with a look at square numbers and square roots which we will need when we get back from break as we will be working with the Pythagorean Theorem.
Standards :8.EE.B 5&6

math tasks

Grade 7
We are working with multiplication and division of rational numbers so we are covering all four basic operations .  Ten Marks is providing practice with these operations and the different form of rational numbers.
Standards: 7.NS.A.1 and 7.NS.2

Grade 8
There is an End-of-Module this Thursday and Friday.  Students have notes on how to solve systems algebraically from both Friday and today. They also have review questions to assist with preparing for the assessment.
Standards: (8.EE.B.5,8.EE.B.6, 8.EE.C.7, 8.EE.C.8

math tasks

Grade 7
We are exploring the properties of operations such as the commutative, associative, and distributive properties as we solidify the rules for combining ( addition & subtraction) of rational numbers.  Ten Marks assignments were given today and also last Friday. Next week we will be looking at the multiplication and division of rational numbers. Lessons 1 - 9
Standards:7.NS .A.1 & 7.NS.A.2
Grade 8
The End-of-Module assessment for Module 4 Linear Equations will be the end of next week.  We are currently working with systems of equations, their stories, tables, graphs, and equations.  We have started identifying systems that will have a solution, infinite solutions, and one (unique) solution.  Today in Lesson 27 we started that adventure.  The students have been cautioned that is may make their brains hurt.
Standards: 8.EE.B.5, 8.EE.C.8

math tasks

Grade 7
We have been working with changing the forms of the expressions and the patterns used to facilitate those changes.  We will be moving into the multiplication and division of rational numbers and are currently in Lesson 9: Applying the Properties of Operations to Add and Subtract Rational Numbers.
The standards are: (7.NS.A.1, and 7.NS.A.2)

Grade 8
We are nearing the end Module 4 Linear Equations.  The EOM assessment will be the later part of next week.  We are currently working with systems of equations and classifications this incorporates what we have learned since the beginning of the year.
The standards are: 8.EE.5,6,7,8

Science Fair Update

Dear Sterling Families,

The Science and Engineering Fair will happen on Thursday, February 8th from 5:30-7:30 pm.  This year, there are some changes, and we wanted to take a moment out to let families know about them.
  • In the past, we’ve required that students stay only for 30 minutes for judging.  This year, we would like students to remain at the science fair for the full two hours.  We understand there are extenuating circumstances and we are willing to work directly with families.  However, the overall expectation is that students are here for the full two hours.  The additional time will allow students to observe and interact with other projects.
  • In the past, we have had judges assigned to review particular students work.  This year, we will have judges assigned to certain sections of the room/gymnasium.  Students will be responsible for ensuring that four judges have seen their project throughout the night.  We will elaborate on this process further with students before the night of the science fair, so they are clear about what they need to do.
  • To increase the learning opportunity the science fair provides and increase student engagement with other projects, we would like for all students to complete a Science and Engineering Fair Bingo card during the night of the science fair when they are not being judged.  We thought this is a fun way to accomplish this goal.
  • We will be offering door prizes and raffles to families this year as well!

math tasks

Grade 7
Students have been exploring travel on a number line, creation of rules for combing rational numbers which are mixed numbers with fractions and signs.  The properties of operations: additive inverse,
commutative, associative, and distributive properties are being applied and analyzed.  We are currently in Lesson 8 of Unit 2 Rational Numbers.
The standard: 7.NS.A.1

Grade 8
Systems of Equations are the focus and involve many of the patterns we have developed since the beginning of the year:  making equations from stories, constructing tables and graphs to co-ordinate them. The slope-intercept and standard forms of an equation provide information in different ways. Students are using this to analyze relationships.  We have explored lessons 23 & 24 and are incorporating some review for the End-of-Module assessment.
Standards include: 8.EE.B.5 and 8.EE.C.8
