math tasks the week of Jan 25th

Our main goal is to make the data representation for the science projects.  Student who have their data will be using it and those who don't will make projected data on what they believe will happen.

We will also be doing skill work,

SAEF 3

In most cases, students should be finished experimenting and ready to move forward.  If not, finishing up sooner is better than later.

SAEF packet 3-Data Tables and Graphing is due on Wednesday, January 27th.

Science Fair FYI

Dear House A Families,

I wanted to update all of you regarding important Science and Engineering Fair (SAEF) news.

  • Students should be actively doing their experiments or designing their prototypes this week!!!!  They should be done (with some exceptions-e.g., growing plants) by Sunday, 1/24/2016.
  • Each student had a digital copy of their remaining science fair packets sent to their google science classroom online.  If you have access to the internet, please encourage your student to show you each of the packets.  Enclosed in each packet are important bits of information regarding each section.  For example, scoring rubrics and supporting weblinks are included in each packet.  If you do not have access to the internet, please call Mr. DeCicco at 893-5511 or email me and I can send home a printed-out copy of the packets so you can review the material with your student.
  • I am available to meet with students during lunch everyday except Wednesday.  I am available to work with students after school from 2:40-3:25 everyday except Tuesdays.  Email me if you have any questions.  I am strongly encouraging students to put additional time and effort outside of normal class time and am willing to make arrangements with families.

KEY DATES:
1) SAEF Packet 3 "Data/Results" is due by Wednesday, 1/27
2) SAEF Packet 4 "Analysis Section" is due by Friday, 1/29
3) SAEF Packet 5 "Conclusion Section" is due by Friday, 2/5
4) SAEF Packet 6 "Poster Checklist and Rubric" is due by 2/9
5) The Science and Engineering Fair happens on 2/11 from 5:30-7:30pm

Science and Engineering Fair Posters

Greetings House A Families,

I wanted to inform families that Science Department has purchased posters for all students in the middle school.  One poster will be available to every student.  If you'd like to purchase a poster on your own, that is fine but not necessary.  We have placed the order and will hopefully have all of them shipped within the next few days!  I hope this helps!  Please email me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
Mr. DeCicco
House A Science

Nightly Reading- Language Arts 1/11-1/15

Students should be reading a minimum of 20 minutes per night.  This is well below the grade level expectation for the average number of minutes for a middle school student.  Why such a low expectation you might ask?  We are hoping students develop good learning habits, one of which is to establish a nightly routine.  Like anything you would like to improve in, reading (and writing believe it or not) only improves in both fluency and comprehension with consistent practice!

Language Arts Homework 1/11/16

Students need to use feedback to rewrite their Holiday Similarities paragraphs (Kwanzaa, Diwali, Posadas).  These are due Tuesday 1/12/16.  Original and new copies should be stapled together.

Science and Engineering Fair Update

Welcome back everyone!  The Science and Engineering Fair (S.A.E.F.) will take place on February 11th.  There are only 28 school days until the S.A.E.F.!

Students received back their S.A.E.F. packet 2 today.  Several elements of the project have already been graded (see pages: 04 Project Proposal and 05 Procedure in google classroom document) and, unfortunately, the results were not so great.

I recommend that students meet with me during lunch and/or after school for a few sessions.  Students are highly encouraged to put additional time for the SAEF!  Email me if you have any questions or would like to know how to best support your student!
