We have been working with similar figures through the use of dilation.  Lesson 6, a handout with dilation from points other than the origin, and the Frayer model for similar that includes measurements:
corresponding angles have the same measure and preserve shape
segments are proportional
           image  = r * the original    and    r  = image / original

Science Cell Projects

Students received back their graded cell project rubrics.  There were many descriptors but the only one that will be on the report card is the one regarding "Cell Functions"  Students are encouraged to make corrections if they received a level "2" or a level "1" on their cell function portion of their cell projects.  If parents or guardians have any questions, please email me to ask.

math tasks

Grade 7
Rational numbers are the focus specifically using equivalent fractions with powers of ten as the denominators, doing long division (divide, multiply, subtract, bring down) to do division of fractions and create a decimal.  Students have Percents On A Number Line with fraction/decimal/percent equivalence. A Frayer model for rational numbers is to include place value starting with tens, ones, decimal, tenths ...... all the way to millionths, and what a quotient, dividend, and divisor are with there placement using a fraction bar, division house, and divided by signs.

Grade 8
Lesson 6 is an extension of Lesson 5 where the scale factor is applied to both values in a co-ordinate pair to find the co-ordinate pair for the image.

Student Conferences

Hello Odyssey Families,

Our team will hold student conferences on Tuesday, April 11th and Wednesday, April 12th from 4:00pm-7:00pm on both evenings.  Please click here for the conference letter with attached sign up sheet.  We think this is a perfect opportunity to work with families, teachers and students to hear students speak about their learning and set goals moving forward.  We hope to see you there!

Sincerely,
Team Odyssey Teachers

math tasks

Grade 6
Lesson 2 was completed this week as worked on visuals for the division of fractions.  We are currently working on Lesson 3.
Grade 7
Lesson 13
Frayer model for rational numbers including repeating and terminating forms.  Percents on a number line has examples of both.  We are also using place value to make fractions from decimal then reducing to equivalent fractions.  Powers of 10 and factorization are also being used.
Grade 8
Dilations Lessons through number 5 have exposed proportionality in similar figures.  The shape in similar figures is preserved as corresponding angles are equivalent.

Team Breakfast Moved to March 31!

Team Odyssey will have an end of the trimester continental breakfast gathering on Friday, March 31, from 7:45-9:00 am.  If you would like to join us in recognizing students of Trimester 2, please pop in for a few minutes, or stay the whole time if you can! Students will be asked to sign up to bring a little something to share. This time around, we have decided to focus on shareables and not use griddles so that we have room for seating, and so that our cooks can relax with a cup of coffee! We know that schedules are difficult to rearrange, so please know that there will be a final student celebration in June as well.  Please feel free to contact Stacey at sendres@mymtsd-vt.org or 893-5513 or Joe Smith at jsmith3@mymtsd-vt.org.

Science Update

Students received a copy of their graded science fair projects on Monday.  It included feedback from the judges.  We discussed how their project grades will translate into report card grades.  Students were encouraged to make corrections and take projects home.  We are beginning a cells unit and want to use student questions to guide the investigation into cells.  Next week, students will create a model cells and will be working with partners.  The project will be due on Wednesday and here is a view-only copy of the project guidelines.  We will move towards answering student questions.
