math tasks

Ten Marks are due.
no new tasks today please complete those that have been assigned

This week in science

In Science, students have continued their algae observations.  We discussed exponential growth (which is a connection to what students are learning in 7th and 8th grade math)  by analyzing two salary options: straight up $500 each week vs. doubling your salary each week.  We also introduced the learning log which will be used for homework in science class.  For next week, we will conclude our algae investigation and graph our final results.

Science Weekly Report

In Science, students are growing algae cultures and making observations over the next couple weeks.  We are observing the color change and estimating the population size under a microscope.  We are also analyzing sample data to practice this important skill.  Next week, students will continue their observations and discuss exponential growth rates.

Reading Log 3 Due 9/26

Hello All!

Reading log three has been handed to students today, Tuesday 9/20 and will be due on Monday, September 26.  If a student is unhappy with their score on the written portion, they may redo the written assignment and hand it back in stapled to the reading log.  All students were given a demonstration of how to successfully complete reading log #2 and offer a few minutes of class time to add or tweak the log before handing it in today.

Ten Marks assignments will be reviewed in all classes.
Grade 6
Lesson 4: Equivalent Ratios
Please do Example 1 and Exercise 1&2
Grade 7
complete Lesson 3:  Identifying Proportional and Non-Proportional Relationships in a table
Grade 8
Review the Problem Set for Lesson 3

Reading Log due date Now Tuesday 9/20!

Students on Team Odyssey had an alternate schedule for Humanities, therefore did not necessarily have an opportunity to hand in the second reading log.  It will be officially due and collected Tuesday, 9/20/16.

Science Week in Review

Last week in science, students learned about lab safety and other school-wide safety protocols.  They analyzed data from the Lamoille River and Lake Arrowhead field trip, created a claim about the river/lake’s health and backed up their claim with data evidence.  This week, we will investigate the factors that affect algae growth by growing cultures in class.  Our goal is to make a connection between the 2012 Missisquoi fish deaths and algae blooms.

REMINDER! Reading Log Due! 9/19/16

This is a reminder that  reading log # 2 is due tomorrow, Monday, September 19.

math tasks

Today we introduced Ten Marks a digital math program that individualizes work on the standards we are using in lessons.  It can be accessed outside of school.  Students were given letter for you so you can also see what they are doing.

We are also continuing to work through the packets in there Current Work sections and enhancing the Frayer models we use for vocabulary.

River/Lake Walking Field Trip

Hi Families,

Tomorrow is our walk to the river and the lake.  We will be working with the Watershed Alliance program to help conduct our studies.  Some important bits of information:

1) if you haven't done so, please send in the permission form for the walking field trip.
2) Students should bring either their school backpack or a small bag with the following items:

  • Hat/Sunscreen (if needed)
  • Water bottle
  • Pencil or pen
  • Shorts (not long pants)
  • Shoes/flip flops that you can wear into the water if you want.
3) Remember, we are walking for 15-20 minutes one way, so wear water shoes that are comfortable or carry them with you and change when you’re there.

Odyssey/House A Math

Hi and welcome back!  I have had some difficulty with the blog but it looks good now.

Last week we did a problem solving exercise in groups.  There were 5 activities requiring the students to build structures.  Students did well with the tasks and had some fun.

We also set up notebooks with at least the following sections: "Notes"," Vocabulary", and
"Current Work".

Over the summer the decision was made to go with Eureka also known as Engage New York as a math program.  The books are coming but have not arrived. Each grade level has a packet to serve as their book and worksheets. These should be in their "Current Work" section.

The 6th and 7th grades are working on ratios.  The 8th grade is working with scientific notation and rules for operations with numbers in exponential notation.  We are in Lesson 2 on all grade levels and have had our first exit tickets.

It is good to be back!  If you have any questions please contact me - sooner is better than later. The year is off to a good start.

Language Arts Homework 9/6-9/12

All Team Odyssey students received their first weekly reading log today, which is due Monday, September 12.  The reading log requires students to set a realistic reading goal and strive to reach that goal.  This requires them to read at home nightly, or as frequently as possible.  One thorough written assignment concludes the reading log and is graded separately.  If lost, a copy of the reading log can be found using this link: READ
