Science
Students started setting up their science notebooks in class today. Science notebooks are a big part of our class and they learned the expectations for them. For homework, students should number each page in their notebook. This assignment will be checked on Tuesday, 9/2.
Students should also get a folder for science class or see me for one that they can use to place papers that will not go into their science notebook.

Welcome Back! Wednesday, August 27th
Math:
It has been a good day. We are organizing our notebooks, loving our new planners which are larger this year, and reconnecting in general. Specifically and for all grades we are making sure there are at least two sections in the notebook for math: Notes & Vocabulary, and Current Work. The 8th & 7th graders have started populating their notes with Divisibility Rules and Fact Families. We will be continuing with this tomorrow. The 6th graders are also making name tags to help me learn their names.
Student have filled in their planners with math tasks and with the list of the three forms they need signed and returned: canoeing trip permission, waiver for trip, and the team letter. We appreciate your cooperation.
It is great to be back!

Science
Welcome back families and students! Students were given a light homework assignment today. They should fill out the "Getting to Know You Survey" for homework and return it to science class tomorrow. I am looking forward to working with both parents and students; this year should be an exciting and eventful one.

Opening Day Letter
8/27/14
Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to the 2014-2015 school
year! Below you will find information to
assist with beginning the year as well as to successfully navigate throughout
the school year.
This year there have been
additions to our team. First, we would
like to welcome Alexander DeCicco, Rob DeCicco's baby boy. Rob teaches science on our team and as a
result of his new family addition, will be taking brief periods of
absence. He will be replaced by Mrs.
Wicks, previously known as Miss Oberding, who worked with us a bit last
year. Also officially joining our team
part time is Karen Allard, a special educator focused on Math. Many of you are
aware that she joined us late in the school year, and we are excited that she
will be continuing to assist our students with math. We also will be joined by
a UVM student, Lyndsey Paquette working with Joe Smith for the year. Last but not least, we have a new Speech and
Language Pathologist, Cara Lovell, who will co-teach with other middle school teams.
The official team list and
contact information can be found at the end of this document. Please note:
All teachers now have specific phone numbers, however, calls go directly
to voice mail during teaching hours.
Emergency contact should still be made through Rhonda Masse in our
office.
To begin our year, we will be
embarking on a team building canoe trip on Thursday, September 4th. This will be followed by an ice cream social
in room 241 from 5:30 – 6:30pm. Students
should have the permission slip for canoeing in their possession. This slip and the accompanying money will be
returned to your child's advisory teacher.
In October we will also be headed to the Flynn. No students will be denied
from going on these field trips due to financial concerns. If you have any questions, please contact Joe
Smith at 893-5529 or at jsmith3@mtsd-vt.org. We have also determined
that portfolio conferences will be held on November 5th and 6th
.
All team
notifications including field trip information, school events and some homework
assignments will be announced on our team blog at www.miltonhousea.blogspot.com.
Students will be
provided with planners to record assignments. Again, some assignments,
especially those spanning longer periods of time, will be posted on our blog. This may help in verifying nights of “no
homework”. All students will be expected
to read a minimum of 20 minutes a night from the DCF list or from other teacher
recommended lists.
Our team classroom
expectations are derived from the 5 habits of mind adopted by our middle
school: 1) citizenship, 2) preparedness, 3) precision, 4) persistence and 5) flexible
thinking. We will take time to review
and use the habits to set goals. Non-negotiable polices such as cell phone use
and acceptable technology use are found on the school web page and mentioned in
the student planner. Also found in the planner is an official school calendar
as well as helpful tools for school. We
encourage you to review the policies with your student as some have
changed. As we move to greater use of
technology in the classroom, it is also important to know that the breaking or
altering of a computer this year becomes the financial responsibility of the
student. This is due to a large number
of computers deemed inoperable as a result of improper use. Students will be
given time in their schedule to properly plug in and return their computers to
the appropriate cart at the end of each day.
Other changes to
the schedule include an extended advisory to allow for movement to start the
day, as well as an additional Unified Arts class. This means that advisory has much purpose and
it is imperative that students be in attendance as frequently as possible. We ask that students bring clothing and shoes
appropriate for the weather on Tuesdays, which will be an outdoor walking day.
If you have any
questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us using the
information below.
We are truly
looking forward to an outstanding year with our house a students and parents.
Sincerely,
House A Teachers

House A Field Trips
Dear House A Families,
We hope your kids are enjoying the last few days of summer as we gear up to start another school year. I wanted to alert you to two field trips that we will be going on within the first month of school.
On Thursday, September 4th, we will be going on a canoe trip with Vermont Canoe and Kayak. This is an opportunity for students to learn about their teachers and new classmates. It is also a great way to teach students about working together. The cost is $25. Half of the group will be leaving at 7:45 and returning at approximately 1:00, and the other half will be leaving at 9:15 and returning at 2:30. Students will be assigned a canoe or kayak and some canoes may have up to three people in them. If you would like to chaperon, please get back to me as soon as possible as space is limited. Attached you will find the permission slip and waiver.
On Wednesday, October 1st, we will be going to the Flynn Theater to see "Encore!" Short Stories and Poetry. This is directly related to our Humanities lessons on short stories. The cost of this trip is $13. Permission slips will be handed out later.
We know that the price of field trips can be expensive for some families. Therefore, the Middle School has set up a field trip account for all students. To put money into this account, students will need to participate in the school fundraisers. Based on the family's participation and the fundraiser, a percentage of the amount fundraised goes into the account. This account is also known as the Boston Account, which helps students raise money for their end of the 8th grade field trip, which cost $325.
No students will be denied from going on these field trips due to financial concerns. If you have any questions, please contact Joe Smith at 893-5529 or at jsmith3@mtsd-vt.org.
Thanks,
House A
