Language Arts, Monday, Sept 22

Students are asked to change present tense sentences into past tense sentences as their evening homework. These are located in their notebooks on the back of their 9/22 verb notes.  Students also took a root, prefix and suffix meanings quiz today.  Those that made flash cards as directed over the weekend preformed significantly better than those that did not.  There is a learning session after school on Wednesday and Thursday (attendance can be one day or both) for students interested in repairing this quiz or improving their writing on either their Sleepy Hollow narrative or their self selected narrative topic from Friday.

Math, Thursday September 18th

We reviewed the platform & red carpet problem no pages 14&15 & moved to problem the next scenario on the TIPS which required students to do tables on page 11 from the pictures and descriptions on page 10.  Your students are working through the problems and will be reviewing the work with you and asking for a signature on their paper.  This is an attempt to have the students share what they are learning with their home partners.
Grade 7
We are working on ratios and proportions on pages 19 with making juice for campers and also reviewing Analyzing Comparison Statements.
Grade 6
We reviewed our vocabulary and added Greatest Common Factor to the list. The Ladder Method was introduced.

Language Arts Homework Tuesday, September 16

Students should be writing their version of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow (aka- The Headless Horseman)
Never heard it or don't remember it?  No worries.  Use the plot chart from class to build your story (most were able to complete this in class) and then write using your chart as a guide. 

Remember, you must have descriptive language! 

Grade 6- should write for at least 20 minutes
Grade 7 7 8- finish your stories

Students are to explain what we are doing in class and continue work in the TIPS.  There is a section at the end that asks for home partner feedback.  Please look at this with your student and have them explain what they are doing then answer the question, sign and return to school.  We hope this helps you understand what we are doing in classes

Flynn Field Trip

Dear Families,

On Wednesday, October 1st, we will be going to the Flynn Theater to see "Encore!" Short Stories and Poetry.  This is directly related to our Humanities lessons on short stories.  We will be reading many of the stories in class prior to seeing them performed at the Flynn.  The cost of this trip is $13.  A permission slip went home with your child today or you can download it from the email I sent..  As always, no child will be denied going on this field trip due to financial concerns and that money from your student's field trip account can be used for this trip.

Langauage Arts Pickle Homework 9/11/14

All students are completing the process of editing and revising their pickle paragraph. Students will demonstrate their ability to revise and edit using a specific checklist, in part, focused on descriptive language. There are 9 different editing/ revision requirements.

Math, Wednesday September 10th

Grade 6
We continued with factors today.  Students are using 3 columns one for the name another for the factors and a 3rd for the models of the factor pairs and what the area/array look like.  On page 23 we all did 12 & 15 then we chunked the assignment and aimed to do 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 with the ultimate goal being 20.  Students worked well in class and are not expected to spend more than 20minutes on the assignment outside of class.

Investigation 1.2 Bridge Length was tested.  Students collected data are to make graphs of their individual group data and the average from last year's class.  There are questions on page on page 9

Science

Students should pick one skill or thing they would like to learn more about or improve.  Students should write how a growth mindset will help them achieve this new skill or learning for no more than 10 minutes for tonight's homework.  We may ask students to share in class.

Language Arts/ Humanities- Homework and Quiz Update

Students received a root word practice sheet today, Tuesday, September 9.  This will be check on Thursday, September 11.  Students should work on the side entitiled Unbelievable.  The reverse side will be used as a make-up for those students that did not complete the homework over the weekend.  Today's qiz revealed that many students need to practice for assessments.  The next opportunity to demonstrate knowledge of root, prefix and suffix meanings will be on Friday, September 22.  After school practice/ study sessions will be held on Wednesday and Thursday of each week.

A goal this year is that all students do at least a half hour of Khan Academy each week for all grades
Grade 6: WALT We are learning/reviewing how to find factors of a number.  Model using a list and factor rainbow.  Vocab: factors   In class we worked on : 6, 10, 15, 17, 25
Grade 7: Vocab: ratio  Investigation 1 Making Comparisons page 5 to page 7.  Analyzing a survey.  The following link was used for real-life examples of ratios & proportions:
Grade 8: Vocab: linear relationships on a Frayer model.  The following link was used to demonstrate a linear relationship, support the characteristics and provide an example of how equations, graphs, and tables are related.
Students should read pages 5 - 7 as we will be doing the experiment tomorrow.

Language Arts Vocabulary Quiz- Tuesday

In Language Arts, students will have a vocabulary quiz asking for word definitions as well as the meanings of selected prefixes, roots and suffixes.  Use the vocabulary packet, vocab worksheet and word parts list as study tools.

  Students have been asked to define the following words and are using them in groups for problem solving activities. The words are:

We have started checking notebook and student work.

Canoe and Kayak Field Trip

Greetings Parents/Guardians,

Tomorrow is our canoeing and kayaking field trip to Jeffersonville!  If you haven't done so already, please make sure that a permission slip, waiver and $25 fee has been brought in by your son or daughter.

Some items to discuss/bring with your son or daughter:

1) a life jacket must be worn at all times
2) please bring sunscreen as it appears tomorrow will be a sunny day.
3) NO ELECTRONICS
4) bring/wear clothes that can get wet.
5) whatever bags they bring will stay on the bus and they will not be able to access it until the end.
6) bring an extra shirt (to be able change in a port-a-potty) &
7) students can either bring a lunch or go down to the cafeteria at the beginning of the day to punch their code in during breakfast.  The students will get a bag lunch that will be brought with them.  All lunches will go into a cooler (supplied by teachers) by their advisory

Our goal is to have students and teachers get to know each other better and foster a deeper sense of team.  This trip is sure to be exciting and will hopefully accomplish these goals.
